Mom is 83 years old, has been on Medicare parts A and B since she was 65. She has secondary (not supplemental) insurance through her late husband’s employer. When dad passed in early 2023, that secondary insurance premium went from $130 per quarter for BOTH of them to $480 per month for just her. We (myself and siblings) are attempting to get her off the secondary insurance and on to a medigap supplement plan to perhaps save her some money. We feel she is a bit “stuck” as her secondary insurance covers her medications. Mom is generally healthy, but the one glaring issue is her cognitive decline (note: she has NOT been formally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s). We understand there is a risk that she will be denied during a medical underwriting process (based on her current medications).
The question I have for the forum: Has anyone out there had personal experience with getting a supplement for someone and found the insurance company NOT delve too deeply in the underwriting process? We are also working with our local SHIP through the Department of Aging. Her state of residence is Maryland, so she is not guaranteed coverage.
Thank you for anything you may be willing to share, and wishing you all a happy, healthy, prosperous 2025.
