Discover Card Perk?

I’m a longtime Disc customer and fan and I have regularly received free privacy protection scan results with an automatic follow-up to remove my personal info from those public sites. But apparently since Disc merged with CapOne I am now required to call a 3rd party to obtain a Membership ID in order to continue this service. “Membership” suggests a fee to me. Has anyone followed thru with this new membership requirement? And did I not get the memo about this post-merger change?

You’re correct - Discover previously offered identity monitoring and personal data removal as a benefit for cardholders. After the Capital One merger, that service was moved to a third-party provider and it now requires a separate “membership” in order to continue.

The request for a “membership ID” is not a scam - it’s simply no longer an automatic and complimentary benefit. But there is still similar protection available for free through Credit Wise or Experian’s free dark web scan.

So you didn’t miss a memo - the benefit just went from complimentary to optional after the merger took place.

Discover used to be so amazing back in the day. I remember they were the first to offer cash back and free credit scores. They used to send the best coupons with my bills, for instance $25 off restaurants, back when $25 meant something. And for the moment, their customer service is still the best in the industry, except for credit unions and small regional banks.

IngDirect was great back in the day, too before Crapital One.

But FWIW, I just made a purchase out of France with my Capital One card and paid no extra fees when Bank of Amigo, PayPal, etc. would have charged me over $10 on a $200 purchase. So Crapital One isn’t all bad.

I called Disc and spoke with a rep and a supervisor. I struggled to explain my experience to them. The super assured me that there had been no change to the Disc service but perhaps 1 or more of the personal info sites had their own membership req in order for me to login and ask for my info to be removed. And Disc has no control over that.

However, all the sites listed containing my info seem to funnel thru beenverified.com, which is a paid membership site for looking up, verifying, removing online personal info. So it seems that when Disc tells us that their scan has found our info on these 10 sites it is informational only. There is no follow-up on their part (despite what the super said) and it is up to us to sign up for the paid services of beenverified.com.

That’s my best guess; does anyone have a better understanding? It’s as clear as mud, as my father used to say, and Disc cust svc seems as much in the dark.

I have had a Discover card for many years. I have not had any information about this from them.

I will not look into this. Thanks for the info!
