Alternative to France Olympics opening ceremony

Looked up the 2012 summer Olympics in London:

Much more better than the French one at this point

Thanks for reminding me. I have the 1984 L.A. Olympics that I have not yet watched. Anyone have a VCR I can borrow?

You can use my Sony Betamax.

Anyone that has ever learned about France knows their sensibilities (today and in history) are different than American sensibilities. So we can like or dislike their show. And people who limit their education can’t recognize or understand something outside of their small worldview. It’s OK to like/dislike something, but people don’t question the limits of their own understanding!

I remember back in the early 2000s when the Iraq war started and France opposed it, Americans protested french fries (and renamed them ‘freedom fries’).
It was pathetically funny, as boycotting french fries means nothing, and shows a performative ignorance on many levels.
And in hindsight - was France right to oppose the Iraq war? Because American knowledge and opinions about it, in hindsight, is questionable. No disrespect to the soldiers who fought the war that was initiated on questionable evidence.

My point, I guess, is that Americans are so judgy and maybe should learn something before declaring it bad. Even with that understanding, it’s OK to not like the Olympics performance - a matter of taste. But too many people declare it to be offensive/heretical without understanding what they are seeing! Perhaps a better response might be “I don’t like it and I don’t understand it.” rather than declaring it bad as if one were an expert !!

Kind of like the Arts – there are paintings/art works/music that we don’t “like” but that are still important works, if we would understand them.*

  • My best friend doesn’t like “Rhapsody in Blue” and asked me to explain its popularity. I did, and she says, “I still don’t like it”. That’s OK. Whereas I found that when I learned more about Rhapsody in Blue, I appreciated it even more.
