We ordered an entree that came with a salad from a local, well established restaurant. The total seemed high, and after double checking the price, it was because they added an 8% additional fee. I pointed out it wasn’t shown on the menu, but they wouldn’t budge. When I got home, I did a dummy order, and it’s hidden. You have to click on taxes and fees at checkout to see the breakdown. This particular place has changed ownership twice in the last few years, the most recent at the beginning of the year. I don’t have a problem with a very small, fixed takeout charge, but 8% is a money grab.

Send a complaint to the consumer fraud division of your state’s Attorney General’s office. Probably not a violation of the Unfair Trade Practice’s Act but will force the business to spend an hour responding to a letter from the AG. The legal issue is whether there was adequate disclosure of the “hidden” charge.

Sounds like a good excuse to shop elsewhere. Also you may want to call them up and say …Bye Bye ![]()
