Social Security Agency Ability To Access Your Bank Account

At the beginning of this month, the Social Security Administration issued EM-25046 (an Emergency Message).

It starts with a small group but looks as thought it will expand.

“The newly released Social Security Administration Emergency Message EM-25046 explains that, starting August 1, 2025, the SSA is expanding the use of its Access to Financial Institutions (AFI) system for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) cases. AFI lets the SSA electronically contact banks and other financial institutions to confirm the balances in applicants’ and recipients’ accounts. Instead of only relying on the financial information people report themselves, SSA workers can now request and receive data directly from the banks. The updated policy also allows a “geographic search,” meaning the SSA can check for accounts at financial institutions near a person’s home address, even if the person hasn’t reported having those accounts. This change is intended to identify unreported bank accounts or balances that might be too high for SSI eligibility, helping the SSA prevent overpayments and ensure benefits only go to those who meet the financial limits.”

Has Clark spoken about this yet and how it effects recipients?
