Microsoft - Impossible to cancel a trial subscription

So, I was desperate one weekend to complete some work stuff and needed Visio. Since it was the weekend, I couldn’t get in touch with my company to have them get it for me. No problem I thought, I’ll just sign up myself and get the free 30 days then cancel it before they charge me. How wrong I was. When the 30 days passed, I logged back into my account and did not see Visio in my apps. I kept the emails to the links to cancel so I was surprised it wasn’t there. I have two accounts; personal and business. I then tried my personal account and nothing there either. So I waited to see what would happen. After another month, they charged my card. It took me probably an hour to find a number to talk to a human at MS. Of course, I get the runaround. They can’t find the subscription in that account and tell me I have to contact someone for my personal account. I finally figure that out and they can’t help me either. They even search for my credit card number and of course can’t find it. I give them the invoice number…nope not on that account, so I go back to the person for my other account. Not there either. I started this process seven months ago. All the while I’m disputing each charge with Citi and they refund the money. And every time I get a letter in the mail from Citi saying they’ve taken care of it and I don’t have to do anything else…at least until the next month comes around. I finally had to cancel my credit card…twice! The first time Citi let them charge the card again, but the second time I had to call Citi several times to make sure MS was no longer able to charge my card. Since then, MS continues to attempt charging my card for which it is declined. I get threatening emails from MS that they will cancel my subscription unless I update my CC info. YES!!! Please cancel it!!!

It makes me want to get rid of everything MS on PC and go to Linux.

To cancel a Microsoft trial subscription (such as for Microsoft 365), follow these steps:

  1. Go to Microsoft Account:
  1. Navigate to Services & Subscriptions:
  • Click on “Services & Subscriptions” in the top menu.
  • You should see a list of all subscriptions linked to your account.
  1. Locate the Trial Subscription:
  • Find the subscription you want to cancel (e.g., Microsoft 365).
  1. Select Manage:
  • Next to the subscription, click on “Manage”.
  1. Cancel Subscription:
  • Under the subscription details, look for an option to “Cancel” or “Turn off recurring billing”.
  • Follow the prompts to confirm the cancellation.
  1. Check for Confirmation:
  • After canceling, you should receive an email confirming the cancellation.
  • Your access will usually continue until the end of the trial period.

If you encounter any issues, Microsoft’s customer support is available through the same portal."

If only anything after the login was as it says then I would be golden. It ain’t.

Thanks, That phone number for MS is an automated line to activate only. No chance of deactivating nor getting live help. It eventually said it couldn’t help me and told me to go to online support, then hung up on me.

I went to the online support URL it told me to go to, followed the instructions and, as usual, the subscription does not show up that I am trying to cancel.

I guess they can just keep trying to charge a CC that no longer exists and I’ll just ignore/delete the hate email I get from them on the 9th of every month.

I don’t know if this helps at all:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/if-you-can-t-cancel-your-subscription-661ead29-7e86-474a-9499-a8b05d44fcf9

Thanks. Went there on both of my MS accounts. I have neither any subscriptions nor do I have any payment options listed. I also went to billing history and there are none in the last 90 days. I have had a bill from them every month since May

I’ll stick to allowing them to charge the non-existent CC and ignore their email. I should probably just mark it as spam so I don’t have to see it again.

You could write them a certified mail - return receipt requested letter that their national headquarters and see if that helps.

I would be concerned that you allow them to bill you on a non existing credit card this debt may show up on you credit reports impacting you credit score and if the debt rises high enough they could actually sue you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am doing that now.

I have desperately tried to get in touch with a real person at MS. It is very frustrating, they wear you down to where you just up and quit. There are links to “chat” with someone at MS that go nowhere or are circular. Phone numbers given to contact them are all automated and you cannot get through to a rep with them.

Ridiculous.

One thing that they are most likely not to ignore is your filing suit in your small claims court establishing jurisdiction under your states Long Arm Statute.

I have never lost a case in our small claims court or failed to achieve my objective.

If you do this be sure to include the value of your wasted time as an article of damages.
