Kevin Hunter The Homework Guy: "WHY 2–3 YEAR OLD CARS ARE A TERRIBLE BUY! Kevin Hunter"

Would Clark Howard agree with Kevin Hunter at the present time?

For goodness sakes. He assumes the average consumer is a dope. If the sales price is not 20 to 25% less than a new one, do not buy. When I was looking for deals, I found new car dealers had outrageous prices on used cars, and knew best how to hide defects. Moral of the story? Buy from individuals and small independent car dealers. Bought a low mile 2008 Corolla about 5 years ago for $7000, and it has been a real winner.

What he is saying is spot on. At least, it’s what is going on in the market place where I reside.
Used car prices are very close to brand new prices, and after I factor in promo’s, interest rates, etc. Buying new is about the same. Even better if you’re willing to buy something too many folks don’t want.
Car buying these days is like playing the lottery with a bunch of shysters.

Not sure when it has ever not been that way.

My experience from recently needing a replacement car after an accident is that dealerships are picking up auction cars just to have something on their lots. In my case, we were looking for a specific car but weren’t fully committed to it, wanting to explore all the options that were available. Because of that we missed out on the best deal. So, know what you want and be ready to act.

I thought most cars for sale on lots were picked up from auctions.

There was a very large car auction place close to my old house. Dealers got first pick during the week, and the unsold stock was opened up for auction to the public on weekends. Needless to say, the creampuffs were gone by then.

Man, what I would give to find a good Dodge Dart or Plymouth Valiant vintage 1970 os so with a slant six. I would convert it to fuel injection, and that would be my ideal daily driver.
