"infestation" of wild vilolets

I have recently got an “infestation” of wild violets. Apparently the source is a neighbor who decided she liked violets and innocently added them to her yard. The result is they made it over to my yard.

I’ve been trying to dig them out, a few at a time but it is tough to get all of the roots.

Reading on line, there is toxic chemical to apply in the fall.

Anybody have any thoughts on how to handle these w/o the toxic chemical?

Thank you

Personally, I would leave them. Violets are lovely. But 30% vinegar with a bit of dish soap will kill most vegetation. If your soil is already acidic, you’ll probably want to neutralize it later with agricultural lime.

TY for your comment.

I use something like that for random weeds in my sidewalk and other places

but will that mixture hurt/kill my grass? Again, TY

I meant to add, can I use that mixture now in the spring w/o killing the grass. TY

It will kill the grass it touches significantly, but, it should grow back from the surrounding grass. You could use a small paintbrush to limit the grass it impacts, but it really depends on how many violet plants are in you lawn or flowerbeds.

I had wild violets in my lawn in Nebraska back in the late 70s. Loved them, and they were either perineal or reseeded themselves. Here in Arizona they die off with the summer heat. I have a very few in flowerbeds that came up this year from last year’s plants. I’m guessing from seeds. Out of maybe a dozen or two dozen that I planted last year, I have two or three that are lovely surprises. Here, violets is are planted in late fall through early winter, and die by late spring…so, soon.

I feel your pain. I’ve never really worried about having the perfect lawn, but I get the wild violets via nature. I’ve tried everything except a tactical nuke. When the moles and the voles came, I just stopped worrying about the violets
