Hotel or vacation rental?

Hi everyone,

When you travel, do you usually prefer staying in hotel or vacation rental? I want to know which one you find more comfortable and worth the money, especislly for long trips.

Easy answer. If traveling alone or with someone you want to share the room with a hotel is best. If traveling with a group a vacation home is the way to go. Everyone can gather together, cook a meal or get takeout, dine together, hang out in the morning. Usually a lot cheaper than booking multiple rooms.

This is a question I ask myself all the time.

For me, it used to come down to two simple factors: how long we’re staying and how many people are traveling.

But the equation has changed. Between stories about hidden cameras, unauthorized copies of keys, and other security concerns, safety has become a much bigger consideration. Then there’s the irony of paying a hefty cleaning fee, only to spend part of your vacation cleaning up before checkout. I’ve also read plenty of stories where guests were charged for damage they swear they didn’t cause, which starts to sound a lot like arguing over a scratch on a rental car.

These days, I look at the total cost, not just the nightly rate. Add in cleaning fees, service fees, grocery runs, loading and unloading all your food, and the checkout chores that sometimes feel like a part-time job, and that bargain rental may not be such a bargain after all.

That said, we still rent vacation homes. There’s something hard to beat about having extra space, a kitchen, and everyone under one roof. We just go into it with our eyes wide open and a mental checklist that’s getting almost as long as the vacation itinerary itself!

For long trips, I’d choose a vacation rental for the extra space and kitchen.
