Long distance towing

I am planning to move out of state in about 6 months. The distance is about 300 miles from where I currently live. I own 2 cars that I need to get to the target location and I can drive one of them. I have no one to drive the other one. So, I am thinking of having the other one towed. Is it safe to do this? When I say safe, I mean safe from getting ripped off, like someone disappearing with my car. The car is worth about $12,000.

Any other ideas?

Why not drive one to your new place, park it, then fly back and drive the second one?

Well, thats an option except I will probably want to stay overnight and drive the car back the next day. I think it would be too much to get offf the plane, have a limo driver meet me (I have no one else I can rely on) and take me to the car and then drive it to the destination (5 hours) all in the same day. I have moved out of my apartment so I will have to stay in a hotel overnight and have a uber driver pick me up at the hotel and take me to where the car is stored (e.g. Public Storage, Cube Smart). I am trying to avoid driving the car 5 hrs straight through as I am 75 yrs old and have Parkinsons. My wife split the driving duties with me geting the 1st car to the destination but she is not available for car #2.

It could be done, but everything would have to work just right. Hence, my interest in having it towed.

Could you rent a U-haul or car at the destination, drive it back to car #2, stay in a hotel overnight with car #2 and drive again the next day to your new place? The reason I suggested U-haul is because you said the car is in storage and oftentimes those places rent U-hauls.

Depending on your specific vehicles, you can rent a trailer hitch from uhaul that is specifically for towing vehicles.

My son moved from San Antonio to Austin, and needed car moving help. I took a bus to San Antonio, drove the car to Austin, took a bus back home to Houston. Each leg of the journey was 180 miles. It all cost a trivial amount of money.

Sonoran, I was thinking the same thing. To the OP, does one of the cars have any towing capacity? Rent a car dolly from Uhaul and use it to tow the other car!

Taking a deeper look into your situation and we don’t know the travel time from point “A” to point “B” it seems as a four hour to four and a half hour drive time from one destination to the other. Of course, that is one way. The conditions of the route was not indicated in your description. However, the geographical area is to be taken in consideration of this drive time if you were to drive one of the vehicles.
Towing has less expense with a motor club membership. I am not here to recommend anyone, but that is an option. If you have that option at hand already it helps. Plan accordingly! I do not know the size of your items you are planning to tow. For example an extended cab Toyota Tacoma takes up more space than a Fiat. Why do I mention this? I mention this because if you can tow two vehicles in one trip then you get to ride with the gentleman in the tow truck. The tow truck needs to be big enough to transport two cars. Thinking in advance, this is done in the final moments of your move. Your are not going to regress to the former residence. You have space to pack anything inside the two cars. You are with the driver as a passenger. The vehicles serve as a big packing box.

Personally I have AAA with an extended distance of something like 100 miles per tow and 3 tows a year… I would have suggested this but the OP would have to be present at each of the 3 pickup I think.

There are companys like Uship and other transport companys. Just check reviews and insurance.

This happened to me. I rented a car and dropped it off and drove the other car back. Thinking back, I wish I would have had the car transported. You can check around. It is safer and quicker.

There used to be a place called Driveaway that hired people to drive others’ cars. Or, maybe you could cut out the middleman and hire someone that you trust or can screen someone to do so, maybe even amongst the people who are replying to your post (I haven’t read if someone has volunteered, but they’d probably need to know the origin and destination).

I’d suggest using a vehicle transportation service (there are some who offer some really reasonable rates. My daughter moved approximately 300 miles from home, she flew and had her car transported and it was less than $300. When the truck arrived, he had 3 other cars on the truck. He had one of those huge trucks that you see carrying cars to a dealership or something. She was even able to pack some of her things in the car - as long as you don’t block the windows - and that was very helpful). Search around (don’t tow).
