Digital Wallets and In-store returns

I was wondering if anyone has experience with doing an in-store return when they paid via Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.

Back in 2020-22, I worked at a retail store. Customer service would take care of returns, but if the person paid via, say, Apple pay, the store did not have the credit card number to do the refund. So the return defaulted to “store credit”, which some people don’t want!

Maybe things have changed since then. But if the merchant doesn’t have your credit card number, and the digital number they got at purchase was an encrypted number, how do returns get properly credited back to the person’s account?
