On the 1/23/2024 edition of The Clark Howard Show, Clark brought up Temu yet again.
Sadly, all true. I have not yet cancelled my Temu account, fearing an even greater amout of span to get me back. Clark is also correct. Over time, the spam has tappered off.
I hope this article isn’t too political.
I would not call it political.
I have been suspicious of Temu because of their ridiculously rock bottom prices. I thought they either used slave labor or were collecting data on customers to sell and make money.
I believe you are correct.
How do you get a phantom credit card?
I know CapOne has them, as does Citi, which I use, although I admit the site is horrible to use. It’s all about sales.
First, you get a Citi CC. The free one. When it arrives, put it away because you never need to use it.
You probably need to use help “generate a virtual card number”
The primary CC you received is the parent, and all VCN’s are the children. [I have many]
On the site, in the lower right box is a menu: “I want to” From there, go to wallet and digital cards. [told you they did not make it simple. Perhaps Cap One is easier, but now I know how to use Citi,
When you click to generate a VCC, you can set the expire date of the max $$ usage. Or just continue and you can change that later.
Here is the new VCC I just created. It was a valid card until taking the snip shot, then deactivated it. As you can see in my Dashboard, it’s deactivated.
msg me if you need help
Does that only work with gmail accounts?
I’m thinking on how I might use that trick. Thanks for sharing it!
It can also work if you have your own domain with many or unlimited email addresses.
In some cases, a domain email can have a default or fallback address, which if a received email for that domain does not exist, it puts it in the default emailbox.
So, if I own “joesdomain” and have the following emails:
joe@joesdomain.com
mary@joesdomain.com
and there is a fallback box of nobody@joesdomain.com
Emails to joe and Mary go to the proper mailboxes, but emails to anyone else, fred@ or sdeiufr@ will all go to nobody@. So if you start receiving spam, you can just put in a filter for the names that either don’t exist or you don’t want.
I buy domains for maybe $12 a year an can have many email addresses. Of course when I say that, a friend had me set up an account for him and he created over 100 email addresses. He had forwards and forwards on top of others rather than just some simple filters and a few mailboxes. He has since understood the error of his ways!
“It generally worked but my thought was that it was a reject from a run that had not yet been stamped with the mfg logo”
this is standard procedure in the electronics field. Ever seen the list of processers that go from fastest to slowest? They all come from the same die. In testing, they bin the good vs. the slower and adjust.
As for your USB drive - this is likely “dumpster diving.” Newegg - a seriously upstanding company that takes their branding seriously - got burned badly by allowing some junk CPUs into their supply chain. To their credit, NE dropped the hammer on their suppliers, and it hasn’t happened since.
I’m hopeful Walmart does some filtering, but I would call temu the new alibaba.
I bought a couple of 1TB USB memory sticks a few years back from Wish.Com and found they overheated and one looked suspect in that it appeared to perhaps not be close to 1tb and had errors.
My guess is that they came off the assembly line for the major manufactorer and were rejected. Thus the extremely low price!
I’m afraid Clark doesn"t need cheaper items from Temu = however, some of the stuff on Temu is good and some is junk, like every other site on the web. What I take issue with is the statement he made about “child labor” in China and his reluctance to do business with them = wake-up Clark - you can’t do anything about it and many people dealing with horrible prices at home are happy to deal with them for the low prices = the child labor problem is everywhere, even in this country = what are you going to do Clark? They don’t give a crap about you and your woke views!
