Tablo (ota local dvr)

It just sounded so good… a one-time cost for a Tablo DVR with 35 mile antenna (bundle) to receive local channels transmitted through wifi without wires or antenna to the living room television with a two tuner DVR. For those with cable for local networks, the Tablo certainly makes sense to reduce tv costs by $100/month. HOWEVER:

The setup was a breeze and the reception (120 channels) certainly impressive. BUT, I don’t know if the issue has to do with my location, I could not pick up any of the local ABC/NBC/CBS channels so I am reboxing to return to Amazon. While there are a lot of complaints about the Tablo especially long-term usage I didn’t find any where the major networks were not found.

Any other experiences like mine? I am wondering if I just happened to get a defective unit or should have bought a separate or different antenna bundle.

Thoughts? Experiences???

I think the first step would be to use antenna web or some other web site where you punch in your address, and it would tell you if you were expected to receive any signals. If yes then try installing an outdoor antenna on your roof if you can and see what happens. If you are satisfied with the results then try the Tablo again and see if it works out for you. Keep trying.

Thanks for the reply … all networks are transmitted from one community over (Cleveland area) so there is no logical reason not to pull the channels with a 35 mile antenna as they all show favorable with the FCC sites. Our condo won’t allow outdoor antennas (or bird feeders, lol) so it looks like I will have to continue to watch evening game shows in the bedroom for the rest of my life. I am just wondering if maybe the tablo and / or antenna is defective and if a different model or configuration could help. I attempted repositioning and multiple scan attempts. I just don’t watch enough network tv to warrant cable costs or hanging wires across the living room. The technology of the Tablo sounded ideal, had it worked.

Last year I wasted hours of my time trying to set up my Tablo. After getting a little clue that possibly it was not playing nice with my ROKU box, I just returned the darn thing. What a waste of time with the unit and customer support.

Make sure that the location in the TABLO is set to the city that has your local stations! I just bought one recently and the default location ain’t where my locals are! A channel scan returns zip! I ran into this problem with SlingTV’s AirTV2. If your zip code is different than where the locals are change to a zip in that city or viewing area and scan again!
