I just noticed today that the Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2023) smartphone that I bought from Amazon in January 2024 has a crack near the bottom speaker.
I don’t know how the crack developed. The smartphone in question usually has a case on it.
Believe it or not, I just purchased a Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024) smartphone from Amazon this month for two reasons:
Unlike the Moto G Power 5G (2023), the Moto G Power 5G (2024) has NFC.
It was on sale. Keep in mind that I bought the Moto G Power 5G (2024) on October 9, 2024, which was a Prime Big Deal Day.
Should I even bother getting the crack in my Moto G Power 5G (2023) fixed? Even though I have T-Mobile, my Moto G Power 5G (2023) does not have Protection 360 at the present time. I understand that Clark Howard does not want people to buy cell phone insurance from a cell phone company. No offense, but I can’t say that I follow every single piece of Clark Howard’s advice religiously. Kep in mind that my Moto G Power 5G (2023) still works well.
Personally I would hold it with the crack down and put a dab of superglue there. I assume that you won’t be dunking it in water. Will it become a spare phone or your primary one?
As for old cellphones, there are plenty of uses. Personally I took an old cellphone I had and got a wrong sized SIM card stuck in it. Visions of putting a grilled cheese sandwich into a VCR slot, but I digress. I ended up opening the cellphone, expecting that it would never work again. I ended up removing lots of screws and connectors, got the SIM card out, put it all back together and it is still working fine. (Truth be told, I only had 1 tiny screw left over!).
I have an old cellphone that has no SIM but is hooked up to wifi. It allows me to play music and stream videos without using my current cellphone. Charged it is also an emergency flash light. You can take photos with it still, etc.
I don’t know if this is the same thing, but I had a Moto g5s plus. After 4 years, in 2022, it developed a crack, not on the screen, but around the front vs back. I took it to a cell phone repair place and they said that the battery was “swelling” and could possibly catch fire. They said to stop using the phone and get a new one, which I did.
This may not be your issue, but I’m just putting it out there.
I took it to Best Buy to dispose of it, and they said the same thing.
I got 4 years out of it, so I don’t feel cheated, and I’m glad I got rid of it.
Wouldn’t your phone still be under the Motorola 1 year warranty? It’s worth calling them. When my phone had a problem I did and was happy with the customer service and turn around time. You will have to wipe your phone memory before you send it, of course, but I used the program that Motorola provides to backup and reenter my phone data. Worked just fine. I will admit that it is a scary thing to send your phone off in the mail. Just saying that I did and was glad with the outcome.
Good thing you didn’t mess with it, I had a Dell laptop battery go into thermal runaway at work, it almost caught fire. It was a spare battery, it was unused on my office desk for 6 months while I was away working at a remote site, I came back, dropped it on the ground, and it started getting super hot and smoking. If it had been fully charged it would have gone up.
I have all Motorolas since 2014. I’m happy, I guess I don’t know any other brands. At $200 a pop especially I’m happy. I’m happy to pay less than $100 per year.
The next one I want needs to support eSim and NFC and I do want a “Power” model with extended battery life. 5G I don’t care about really.
I had a Moto G phone before and had no problem getting a replacement during the one year warranty. There customer service was easy to use and friendly. Just sharing my experience with everyone.
