I don’t know about Goodwill in particular, but I know that some non-profits are non-profit in name only… they are run rather ruthlessly, with their eye on the Dollars, their executives get paid very handsomely, and employees and customers can end up losers.
I’m thinking of hospitals, even the national SPCA.
So, are you saying this is related to the DOGE stuff? Businesses lay off workers and close offices all of the time. Is more related to the crime issue in the Bay Area? I don’t k ow, but it’s always sad when people get laid off. I’ve been laid off. I’ve laid off people. It’s part of life.
I’m not implying this is DOGE related. But it be that all of the tariff, recession, and inflation worries are causing donors to pull-back donations, which would cause the non-profits to slash.
I think your description is spot-on for Goodwill. It is NOT a non profit. It is all about profit, and yes the big che3z gets paid extremely well. About the only thing charitable is that they hire some people who cannot get work elsewhere, to sell merchandise that they got for FREE.
I also do not think that all the worries de jour really do much to dampen donations. People take stuff they no longer want to give away, hoping it will benefit someone else other than the CEO.
