I agree with Clark about having a used vehicle independently inspected before buying. How do I allow the potential buyer to have my 2011 Ranger inspected? Nearest mechanics they may choose from are 10-15 miles away or further. I have personally inspected my vehicle purchases but never had a buyer ask for one. Do I drive there and wait on my time? Or Say bye as someone drives it away? Secure their ID, deposit, birth certificate, First-born ? I have sold and bought tons of things on Craigslist including houses, cars, bicycles, etc. and feel comfortable with these interactions. Thanks for the ideas.

Iād drive my truck to the mechanic myself and meet the buyer there. That way I keep the keys, they get the inspection, and we both feel comfortable. I only let someone take it alone if Iāve got their license and a deposit first.
Super advice! Easy enough. Iāll insist or no sale, Iām never desperate as a seller. Thanks!
Iād pay for the inspection myself and provide the written report to potential buyers. You can fold in the cost into your selling price. And if there are needed repairs, you can either do them yourself or inform the buyers and let them decide.
The last car I sold to an individual buyer was about 3 years old with 40K miles. I didnāt feel it needed an inspection as I had all service records and oil changes from the dealer. I met the person in a grocery store parking lot and let them take it for a test drive.
But for an older vehicle, I think the ethical way to be an honest seller is to have your own inspection at a trustworthy mechanic. If there are significant repairs or maintenance needed, then be sure to disclose.
Beware that it is now a very common scam for a mob of several scammers to show up (2-5) and āinspectā your car while one of them distracts you. Theyāll smear grease where it shouldnāt be and tell you that you have a leak ā then lowball you.
Thanks, Great point, Iāll be extra careful. Fortunately I know the exact condition of my truck inside and out! I also āinterviewā buyers asking; Where are you from? How will you pay? etc, Any awkward responses and I will end the transaction. My last two vehicle transactions involved young families, calm and uneventful.
