Per Capita Cost of Gas in 2022

The US has a total population of 330 million people. According to the US dept of energy, in 2020 drivers of all road vehicles drove a total of 2.83 trillion miles. That’s 8,575 miles for each man, woman and child in the United States!

If we drive the same total distance this year, and the price of gasoline & diesel fuel stays at or above $4 per gallon, at an average of 25mpg, we will spend more than $549 per capita for cars and at an average of 5mpg for trucks, $4116 for diesel fuel per capita this year. That’s over $4,650 for every man, woman and child in the US.
