Well, if you really listen to Clark. He says “Roth, Roth, Roth”.
For more informed comments, it would be helpful to have additional information about your financial situation:
your current debt, tax rate, retirement assets in taxable accounts, retirement accounts & traditional versus Roth accounts, current and desired asset allocation, 529 contribution, any future pension?
If you’re not maxing out on a Roth IRA I would starting funding a Roth IRA to its maximum annual contributions. Then, within the Roth IRA, dollar cost average into low cost ETFs. (Dollar cost averaging is what you’d be doing by making monthly $3k investments - investing the same amount of money on a monthly basis in the same ETF. The effect is that you buy more shares when it’s cheap and fewer shares when it’s expensive. That makes for the best overall average cost.
Personally, I’d buy relatively broad low cost (their annual management and other fees) index ETFs such as the S&P500, Dow or NASDAQ. But I would also consider sector ETFs if there are sectors such as health care that you believe may have strong future prospects.
As a business owner you have some options for much higher contribution limits than a standard w-2 employee. The Roth versus Traditional IRA is an interesting analysis/discussion/debate depending upon your unique situation. I prefer Roth and then the taxable brokerage account with Long Term Capital Gains. I have been very happy with Vanguard VT ETF. It has almost 10,000 stocks from the global market.
I am maybe an advanced beginner/intermediate level investor. I continue to read, learn, analyze, discuss with my trusted friends and mentor. As one of my mentors says “What has worked for me, may not work for you, and it may not continue to work for me!”. And all other standard disclaimers apply.
