Costco to offer Medicare plans?

People who know me know that I am a genuine Costco superfan.

So this is a surreal sentence to write:

Costco Wholesale and SCAN are working together to develop jointly branded Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement products.

Anna Wilde Mathews of The Wall Street Journal broke the news today.

Costco has built something exceedingly rare: trust at scale.

Its members believe that if Costco puts its name on something, it has been carefully vetted for quality and value. That trust was earned one decision and one member experience at a time.

That is exactly the kind of trust healthcare desperately needs.

SCAN has spent nearly 50 years serving older adults.

Now, we have an opportunity to pair our deep Medicare expertise with one of the most trusted consumer brands in America and explore whether choosing and using Medicare coverage can become simpler, more intuitive and more connected to people’s everyday lives.

Because of federal regulations, we cannot yet share details about benefits, locations or timing. We will say more as soon as we are permitted.

But I can say this: at a moment when many health plans are retreating from Medicare, SCAN is leaning in with ambition, discipline and a commitment to doing things differently.

I’m enormously grateful to the Costco and SCAN teams who made this possible.

Professionally, this is a major milestone.

Personally, for a longtime Costco superfan, it is just incredibly cool.

This is interesting. I wonder how Clark feels about this. He loves Costco but does not like Medicare Advantage plans. He has called them disadvantage plans. So now that Costco is jumping in to the Medicare space will Clark change? Would love to hear his take on this

It’s hard to do healthcare affordably and well. I hope they don’t damage Costco’s reputation with “ordinary” service.

I’m waiting to see what they offer. That info should be available Oct 1,2026,when MA insurance companies have to show plan details.

Once upon a time I was a licensed insurance agent. We did a lot of senior health insurance. In our area, only Medicare Supplements were a reasonable choice. Various companies offered Medicare Advantage Plans in our area over the years. None stayed. The medical providers and insureds were unhappy.

My parents live in a very large city. They have SCAN. They are very happy with it. They have had zero problems. I once helped them with a minor problem and was very impressed by the company. SCAN has never been offered where I live.
