Best Swamp Cooler, Which One is Really Worth It?

And correct that please! They work ONLY in dry climates. In Arizona, swamp cooler is an air conditioner. In Florida or Houston it is worthless because you already live in a swamp and don’t need more humidity.

You are absolutely right, thanks for pointing that out. I should have said they work only in dry climates. In humid areas they add moisture without providing effective cooling, so they are generally not a good choice. I appreciate the correction.

No experience with those two. We had a small evaporative cooler a few years back and it worked surprisingly well during very dry summer days, but once humidity went up it barely made a difference.

If you live in a dry climate they can save a lot on electricity compared to portable ACs, but I wouldn’t recommend one for humid areas.

I have one built in on top of my roof. The controls are built into the wall and it has its own water supply, so it’s very easy to use. I only do some maintenance at the end of the summer season. I just drain out the water from the holding tray, hose down all 4 water pads with fresh water to remove any hard water build up and check the circulating water pump, oil some parts and float if needed. I live in Nevada so it works extremely well and is cheap to use compared to an air conditioner or a central air unit. Also, if I start cooling in the afternoon before it gets hot I can bring the temperature down to 68 degrees and keep it that way till the sun goes down.

Never knew swamp coolers existing anymore. Back in the 1960s when A/C was an expensive option in cars the produced units that went in the windows. Everyone said they were little to no use.
