I am planning a trip to South Bend, Indiana this summer. I usually stay at a La Quinta. The nightly rate is usually between $86 - $130. Now the rates are $170. Could be with a softball tournaments taking place. Looking at all the weekends, the prices are high. Do hotel rates drop a few weeks before your stay?
OMG, the largest ham radio gathering in the world is Dayton Hamvention, actually now in Xenia OH. The motels in Xenia charge $200+ per night but only during Hamvention. Yes motels do that!
I have been wondering this, too. If it’s a softball tournament, will the room rates drop if teams cancel?
Have you seen Clark’s guide to getting cheap(er) hotel rooms?

I guess if you really want to stay at La Quinta, pay the $170 now, check on prices between now and your trip, and if prices drop, cancel and rebook.
Hotel prices go up as bookings increase. It could be something like a wedding party is staying at this particular hotel that weekend but the hotel across the street has plenty of rooms and has much better prices. You just have to check around
I have never been to the Dayton Hamvention but I believe that you are spot on. That is a giant gathering. I believe 30,000 attendees are expected this year.
Within a half mile of the South Bend, Indiana there are three other hotels. Those are two star hotels. The La Quinta which is the closest to the airport was a 2 1/2 star motel. With upgrades to the outside and redoing the inside they want it to be a three star hotel.
In the past staying there, on Friday and Saturday nights the drunks would come in a be noisy from 2:00 AM - 3:00 AM. With the higher price, will probably cut down on the drunks.
I always find it interesting that the hotel site room rate might be listed, for example, as $150. However, when you select that for a multiple night stay that includes maybe a Friday and/or Saturday then look at the detailed charges it is likely that each night is a different price that averages out to the posted rate.
