I use Tracfone and I was able to get simple instructions on how to do so using the chat feature on my account page.
I have locked my sim card. Now I have one more item on my “Clark’s must do list” (freeze your credit etc.) that I mention to family and friends.

I have 2 mobile services. One has a security PIN, the other has 3 security questions. I’m not sure if these qualify as SIM-Lock.
No. You need to search your provider’s web site, use the chat feature as 19and41 did or call the carrier . I have T-mobile and found the link to turn on the sim card lock by searching for “sim protection”.
My Tech guru is Leo Laporte and he said security questions are normally not good. But he has a great way to turn them into great security. Don’t use the correct answers! Yes, you can make up non-nonsensical answers to (example) What is your mothers maiden name?
Any where I have a sign in that uses that system I make up fake answers. OF COURSE you have to write it down but it does make security very effective.
My cell carrier is Visible and I use the sim PIN lock. Piece of mind.
I just locked my sim card in Mint Mobile, very simple to do.
I have also noticed that, at least on mine, the first phone unlock after shut down is to access the SIM card, then unlock the phone.
