Hackers may have stolen the Social Security numbers of every American

Government at work again.

The biggest contributor to ID theft.

FWIW the site that was hacked is not a government site.

so what, MY Social Security card says “NOT TO BE USED FOR IDENTIFICATION”. When did Uncle Sam decide break that rule?

That means that the SS card they issued you cannot be used as an ID card, and that’s because back in the day you could apply for a SS card without any proof of birth. It was only later when you wanted to apply for SS benefits that you had to prove your birth date.

what is a non government site doing with all of our SS numbers? Did they arrest the perps?
is there any stop gaps for us citizens?

Great questions!

Looking at my SS card it plainly states: “For Social Security and tax purposes - Not for identification”. Almost 70 so verbiage may have changed over the years. The original sole purpose of the card was to claim benefits, but the temptation to use it as a universal ID overcame all resistance and now it’s demanded everywhere, hence the prevalence of identity theft.
