Don’t trust, actually, but definitely verify
When Clark talks about selecting a financial advisor, I wish that he would caution his listeners to ask for documentation in writing. Financial salesmen are well practiced at misleading and taking advantage of you… that’s their job!
Q: “Are you a fiduciary”
A: “Our company requires all of our financial advisors to adhere to fiduciary standards.” (Translation: We are required to maximize profits at your expense)
Q: “Are you a fee-only advisor?”
A: Absolutely! (Translation: AUM fees, commission fees, sales fees, redemption fees, 12b-1 fees, etc, etc ad nauseam)
Unfortunately many people who seek out financial advisors are not willing to read simple disclosures even if hundreds of thousands of dollars are on the line.
