Big Lots in Bankruptcy

Some of you may already be aware, but for me it was a surprise today to see that Big Lots is in bankruptcy (for restructuring). They face liquidation and are behind on store rents.

I was surprised during my first few visits decades ago in finding all sorts of things I didn’t know I wanted or needed. Somehow I think it is my fault. There were days when I would visit 3 different Big Lots in a day looking for deals. One of my biggest regrets moving away from the hubbub of the mainland was not being able to go to Big Lots anymore.

The news reports “Big Lots is taking steps to address these challenges, with the recent launch of a new app to elevate the shopping experience” suggest that perhaps Big Lots was not as quick to implement things like digital apps for shoppers. REALLY? Part of the love of Big Lots, especially in the early years, was the treasure hunt to see what might be hidden away in the store.

I hope that they can exit their bankruptcy and thrive again. If they can, then their biggest bargain may be their current stock price.

I heard on the radio they were going into Chapter 7 liquidation and closing the doors, not just bankruptcy. Laying off 27,000 people.

Yes, I see now the news that they are closing all stores.

I am sorry to see that.

Christmas sales are apparently running hot because people are trying to front-run tariffs. Which means 2025 sales will stink.
