I researched about the best home air purifiers for the past few days because I need one to improve indoor air quality and reduce dust, allergens, and pet odors. I read reviews from sources like New York Times, Consumer Reports, and other popular home appliance review sites, and they are recommending these two as the best options:
However, I am having trouble deciding which one would best suit my needs and need your expert advice. In my home, I have issues with dust, pet dander, allergies, cooking smells, and general air quality. I want an air purifier that can effectively cover my living room and bedrooms, run quietly, and not require too much maintenance.

I have pollen allergies that are severe enough that I get allergy shots. We are also subject to wildfire smoke at times. I did a great deal of research and we ended up purchasing an Austin Air Health Mate Plus. Initial cost is high. But it has been operating for 3.5 years on the original filter. The original filter is expected to last about 5 years. So the filter media cost is less than $100 per year for 24/7 operation. We love it.
We have another Air Purifier as well. It is a Blue Air 121. We bought two of these at Costco when they had them at a great price. One fell over and broke. Blue Air would not help us, but Costco did. The air purifier works very well. The filter media cost is higher than the Austin Air. This model has been discontinued. I was not happy that Blue Air would not help us when one tipped over and the fan broke. I don’t think I would buy another based upon that experience. When this model quits working I will buy another Austin Air.
The inexpensive models frequently have very small filter media and the cost of operation is higher. They also do not have the amount of carbon for gas and odor absorption.
