Clark posted an article on 8/15/2024 about “8 Things to Stop Buying this year”. I agree on 7 of them. The one that I don’t agree on is Gym Memberships (for some people). Having said that, yeah, for many people they are a waste of money if they don’t use them. Clark suggested buying exercise equipment for home instead. If someone isn’t motivated to work out at a gym, they probably won’t use the home equipment either. Just keep that in mind and don’t kid yourself. I have paid for gym memberships for decades and always get my money’s worth from them. Over the years I’ve gone to a gym at least 2-5 days a week. I do think you have to be motivated though. One other hint for anyone on medicare and a gym membership. Most medicare advantage plans and some medicare supplemental plans will include a free gym membership in their benefits. So once you get to medicare age and want to belong to a gym, investigate that option.
I disagree with your logic and it’s application to most people I know, including myself.
We have a dedicated exercise room with a precor crosstrainer, a total gym, an inversion table and a Matrix treadmill all professional-grade equipment.
The treadmill and crosstrainer are used daily. The Total Gym 2-3 times a week and the inversion table as needed.
You couldn’t pay me or my wife enough to make daily trips to the gym.
Exercise equipment at home would be a total waste for me. Anything large would likely become a clothes horse, and anything small would get buried under clutter. With a gym, there would be at least some accountability and/or social interest.
My advice has been that it a member is not going to consistently attend the gym they might as well just give me the money.
I have been a 7 days week member for 40 years.
