Along with homeowners and auto I’ve had an umbrella policy through USAA for several years. In two years the umbrella policy has gone from $260 to $1009 for the same one million coverage with no claims on any of the policies. I didn’t know until today’s research there are carriers that issue standalone umbrella policies (monoline umbrella). Wondering if anyone has a recommendation for one of those companies. Thanks
Put this under the wrong thread…so adding it here. My computer’s Copilot listed RLI and Markel as companies that sell standalone umbrella policies. I haven’t researched them because I hoped somebody else had good information.
That’s crazy expensive. Insurance companies do not reward loyalty. Get an independent insurance broker and let them shop for you.
I use Amica for all 3 policies and my umbrella policy is $220/million.
I would also use an independent broker. One caution will using a standalone umbrella carrier is the potential for claims disputes between the two companies’ lawyers .
I understand the concern about having two different insurance companies but I think the odds of the policy being used are pretty low so I’m looking for a low price. USAA may be a really good insurance company and is highly recommended on Clark Howard’s site but it’s more than tripling of my cost from 2024 to 2026 when nothing has changed other than my age is just unacceptable.
James, have you contacted USAA to ask why they’ve increased your cost so much? It’s a long shot, but perhaps there was an error that can be fixed.
I’m not sure if this will help, but my policy increased significantly as well. When I looked into it, I learned that homeowners insurance rates can be closely tied to your auto insurance profile. In my case, the increase was largely due to having two new drivers under the age of 20 on my auto policy.
My big increase was in the umbrella policy, not homeowners or car. Interestingly I don’t have any of the triggers I’ve read about that lead to high umbrella rates.
I have been using RLI for the past 5 years. No idea if they are any good since I never filed a claim but last time I renewed it was $765 for a 2m policy. Back in 2022 I was paying $284 for 1m coverage. It has gone up over the recent years.
Thanks for the comment…and yes I will be doing that but I wanted to find out what other options are available too.
