How early should I shop for home and auto insurance prior to renewal?

I currently have an annual policy which bundles my home and auto insurance coverage. It is due to be renewed in November. How early should I shop for insurance? Should I wait until I get a renewal notice or is it better to shop around in advance?

I usually do it when I get my renewal, which is about a month in advance. That way, I can just send the Decaration pages to other insurance providers to get comparable quotes.

Do you leave the pricing on the pages?

Excellent question. I black out all pricing info with a sharpie and then scan to a PDF.

I do it EVERY January. Dont assume there hasnt been a change in a year. And ask when they last got a rate increase !

Where can I find legitimate find home owner and auto insurance quote? I feel all these information’s you give are mostly sensitive yet you have to broadcast to the internet. You know that they will sale your info for extra income for sure .

I started shopping too early. Amica for example will only quote 30 days in advance. Other insurers did quote longer. I ended up requoting a couple of policies once I was in the 30 day window. If I had it to do over again, I would shop 20-30 days before the renewal date.

There shouldn’t be any penalty for switching insurance companies at any time before renewal. They will prorate your refund for the unused portion. You just have to be able to afford the cost of the new insurance because your old company may slow roll your refund…
