Got a phone- now how do I get a local number?

Now that I got the hardware, I need a number for it. My beeper number will not transfer over.

A friend recommended Helium Mobile for $15 a month. But they talk about porting over your old number. I never had a mobile number. I MUST have one with Atlanta area codes- 404, 770, 678, and I think 470. Otherwise my wife cannot call me from our land line.

How did I get a new phone number assigned with one of these area codes? Helium Mobile says nothing about it on their website.

Most carriers usually let you choose a new number with a preferred area code during activation even if you are not porting one in. If Helium Mobile does not mention it you might need to contact their support to request an Atlanta area code specifically.

As is typical of low-cost companies, talking to a human about a matter like this is virtually impossible. They have yet to respond to an e-mail.

Henrius, I have been very happy with Visible, the low cost carrier owned by Verizon. When you establish an account with them they assign you a number. I am assuming with an area code you want.

Thank you for that. Have not heard of Visible, and not ranked in Consumer Reports. $20 a month as opposed to $15, but the $20 includes all taxes.

Pick a carrier and request a new number with an Atlanta area code during signup, or contact support to assign 404, 770, 678, or 470.
