Living in South Florida we keep it at 77 degrees during the day. At night at 73 degrees. Wish I could keep it at 70 degrees all day but…$$$$$$$

We are in Northern California central valley and have a large percentage of our summer over 90, even over 100 degrees “but its a dry heat” they say. Nights maybe half the summer are cool enough to open windows and use fans (except when there’s wildfire smoke which happens a lot more often than years ago)… so daytime we keep the thermostat at 78, and at night 76 if we can’t open windows. Got a really good filter in the central AC too for the bad smoke days.

My thermostat goes up to 85 during the day (midweek). I have two huge trees that shade my house, so the indoor temp never gets up to 85. It comes down to 78 when I am home, although if it’s unusually hot outside, I’ll lower it to 75. If I get home during the day, it’s usually after a bike ride, so 80 degrees in the house feel pretty good. I’m on average pay (I pay basically the same rate year round) and it is $66 per month.

Live in the Northwest
Winter: 64 during the day and 60 when sleeping. We have a wood stove on the main floor to warm the main living area when we’re around.
Summer: No AC, so it’s up to mother nature. House can get up to 85 and generally the cool nights allow us to cool it down some, though we’ll still have a handful of uncomfortable nights to deal with.

I am in the opposite situation. With no insulation in the walls, no heat and no air conditioning, luckily the temps stay mostly between 60 and 85 degrees. The opening or closing of the windows regulates my temperature. Inside when there is no breeze it can be 85 with somewhat high humidity. Luckily I have acclimated to the temps.

We have the highest electric rates in the nation so saving on heating and cooling is helpful. In August 2021, the average retail price of electricity for Hawaiian residences amounted to 38.14 cents per kilowatt hour. Compare that to the cheapest North Dakoka at 9.63 cents per kilowatt hour.

That is not to say that everyone in the state suffers. Many use air conditioning and some must have heat. There are places on my island ranging from the above temperatures and going down to close to freezing. Yes we get snow but few live at that altitude.

Imagine asking what a person does in Hawaii for a living… [Strange Occupation](https://www.sfgate.com/hawaii/article/Meet-Hawaii-snowblower-operator-Maunakea-volcano-16707328.php)

The air conditioner in the truck quite a while back. I open the windows and lower the back window a bit and get a breeze while driving.

Don’t call me crazy yet. It’s Houston 100F+. I keep my downstairs at 87F, so basically does not come on, during the day, with fan of course, unless I need to cool off for an appointment. At night I set the upstairs at 79F on thermostat, but it’s cooler than that in bedroom, after a duct separation to double air flow, with fan of course. Besides reducing e- bill, I don’t feel like being hit by a sledgehammer going out. Body gets used to it.

We keep the A/C on around 75 during the day and a bit cooler at night. We have a whole house fan which really helps cool the house as well.

Though I like to be cool, I like to save money even more.
Two stories (two zones) with our 4 bedrooms on the second floor.
Downstairs about 78 during the day, 82 at night.
Upstairs, reverse,
About 80 during the day and about 72 at night.

I’m an HVAC tech. I have programmable (WiFi) thermostat. I have it set to 78F during the day, automaically drop to 74F at 6PM, then 68F at 11PM.
In the winter, I have 62F during the day, 68F at 6PM, then 65F at 11PM

In Georgia I had a whole house fan but the house was fairly air tight. The doors to outside had warping because the fan was pulling air from outside. That meant that during the winter, there was a draft because of the warped doors. That did help slightly when I had a winter fire going in the fireplace as chimneys need a draft of air from somewhere. Still, not very efficient.

To be technical, I don’t have a themostat now, nor a heater. I occasionally use an air conditioner to dehumidify. Highs and lows outside: Summer 85 day, 70 at night; Winter 80 day, 65 night. Of course I am rubbing it in, wouldn’t you? Tonight at 9pm it is 69.4 degrees. However, just up the road and 14,000 feet up: **Warning(s)** Fog, ice and high humidity, Moderate/strong winds, Chance for flurries. Luckily I don’t live up the road 🙂

Today was Lahina Noon as we call it. This phenomenon only occurs in the tropics; the Sun is never directly overhead on any other part of the planet. **Hawaiʻi is the only U.S. state in the tropics and thus the only state where this occurs**. By the way, WE are true Southerners as we are west of Mexico City.

It doesn’t occur in latitudes greater than the tropic lines of Capricorn and Cancer.

As a 74 YO senior trying to retire, we quit using our central heat and air. It may get up to 90 degrees in our house (I work remotely at home) so I use a portable AC unit in my office while I’m working, and a window unit in the bedroom (63 degrees) at night for sleeping. Mostly uncomfortable for me, but since my husband works in a machine shop 7 days a week with no AC, he is actually comfortable, since he is used to the heat.

80F at night for sleeping (with fan). 86F day (with fan). It’s TX after all. Even at 86F, when the outside temp is 105F+, electricity consumption will skyrocket. Also, cardiac health wise, stepping from 76F inside to 105F outside just stepping out will give one a hell of a shock.
