Personal Umbrella

I’d take a close look at Texas Property Code 42.002. The way I read it, with the exceptions in Texas Property Code 42.002. (b), the $100K exemption applies to all of the family’s personal property described in Sec. 42.002.

If that’s the case, you’d quickly blow through the $100K exemption. 3 cars and some furnishings would probably do it.

We built up wealth by being frugal and doing without, I’m not sure we’d break through $100k! Our two cars are probably worth less than 1% of our total net worth.

Doesn’t that leave non-retirement financial assets exposed?

I’d get a smaller umbrella to cover non-retirement financial assets. I bought $2 million, might need only $1 million or even $500k if they will sell them that small.
