I received 2 batteries with the mower which they say can do a half acre. I also received batteries with each of the other 3 tools I have for 5 total batteries plus multiple chargers. So you could do it with multiple batteries. It is a self propelled mower, but they also sell a riding mower that comes with 12 batteries. Sometimes Costco puts that on sale too.
That’s a good point about repair costs. I’ve noticed the same thing with some household equipment sometimes replacing an older machine seems easier than paying a large repair bill, even when the older one is still perfectly usable. I do think there’s a good financial argument for buying something durable and maintaining it properly rather than constantly replacing things.
Maintenance is everything in addition to “wear” items. If you leave your mower in the elements, never clean it or what not, you will have repair bills if you want it to run. Same for most gas powered tools. For example, if you leave gas in your mower over the winter, it’s probably not going to be happy.
The one exception I take is 2 cycle engines for homeowners. Battery versions have come a long way, and they are not as finicky as 2 cycle engines. I’m not sold on the mowers and riders. Quite expensive. As an electrical engineer, I have some concerns about having high energy products sitting in my garage.
As for appliances in general - understand what wears. Dryers: rollers and drive belts for the drum. Easy to replace. Water heaters - flush that tank (this is a religious item on youtube), etc. Dishwashers - watch for small metal things and popcorn kernels. Clean the filter once in a while.
For me, I HAVE to do this. I do not have the typical family, so all of my appliances age in dog years. When I retire an appliance, it’s at the official end of life.
